The Heathers Project
Artist Statement
The Heathers Project is my independent project for the 2021-22 school year; my second year in VAM. The Idea behind the project was to create visuals for some of the songs within Heathers The Musical (a Broadway musical).
This project was wonderful to work on! I found myself stepping deeper into this universe of music and art than I ever have before. Heathers has been a musical that I always enjoyed, however after completing this project I found myself more in love with the story and its characters. I chose to make this project digitally due to my love of creating digital art, I found the medium easy to mend; to unite the concepts within the songs.
In the beginning I chose to put each of the drawings in perspective. This was to not only build on my skills, but to add the feeling of the viewer, and the character’s perspectives molding together. The colour pallets I used evolved based on the song and its mood. An example is the drawing of Candy Store; I used each of the Heathers colours to represent them but I washed over the drawing with shades of red to show Heather Chandler's control, and the danger all three of them represent in the story.
The Overall Idea of the project was to push myself and create visual representations for the musical. I believe in the end I succeeded in this, and in impressing myself with the work I did, but not without some roadblocks. I found the anatomy of the characters, in perspective, occasionally difficult to draw, some were easy, and others I needed references for. Finding the right colours and perspective to represent the songs was difficult, however I solved the problem through asking some of my friends who are familiar with the musical. My knowledge of the musical along with the movie, helped me organize the characters into compositions I believed would represent their emotions well. In the drawing for Seventeen I used a scene in the movie where Veronica is realizing J.D. has been lying to her, this is a crucial moment in the movie just as Seventeen is in the musical; this being why I molded the two together.
I believe this project has grown my knowledge on composition and the skills, such as perspective, I use when creating art. I hope to keep growing my art abilities and improving my skills and understanding to become the best artist I can be!
